A Bouquet of Flowers in a Crystal Vase
after Nicolaes van Veerendael · 2026
After the 17th-century Flemish master, yet what blooms within the composition is another matter.
Faces push through the petals. Roses bear mouths. A fallen bloom at the table's edge stares upward with a single eye. The bouquet is formally perfect and quietly wrong — a vanitas that has forgotten its own rules, or remembered something the tradition preferred to leave unsaid.
