Sebastian (2025)

This is a meditation on the moment before becoming—that suspended instant when the human stands at the threshold of transformation into something eternal. I wanted to capture not the dramatic climax of martyrdom, but the quieter, more universal moment that precedes the transformation, with the last flicker of doubt that touches even the most sacred among us.

With this work I deliberately played on the edge between meaning and meaninglessness: the barely recognizable figure, scarcely resembling human form at all, transforms instantly into something laden with divine significance with the simple addition of symbolic elements. It is an exploration of how easily we create meaning from the abstract, how quickly the unrecognizable becomes archetypal. Just by adding context we can transform the meaningless into profundity; with a few symbolic gestures we are capable of conjuring up centuries of cultural memory, and we can make the formless become sacred.
